Extremadura's Lithium-Ion Battery Gigafactory: A Cornerstone of Spain's Green Industrial Renaissance

In a significant stride towards a sustainable industrial future, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for AESC's lithium-ion battery gigafactory in Extremadura. This ambitious project, representing an initial investment of 1 billion euros, aims to create 900 jobs and position Extremadura as a global leader in the automotive industry of tomorrow.

Addressing the gathering, Sánchez underscored the project's significance as the best example of the government's commitment to reindustrializing Spain through a green and digital lens. He praised the initiative's potential to establish Extremadura as an international benchmark in future automotive technology.

The event, attended by key figures including Minister of Industry and Tourism Jordi Hereu, President of the Junta de Extremadura María Guardiola, and representatives from AESC, marked a pivotal moment in Spain's transition towards sustainable mobility and economic prosperity.

Sánchez emphasized the government's dedication to attracting foreign investment and fostering sectors that guarantee stable, dignified, and quality employment. He highlighted Spain's leadership in economic growth among major European economies, creating four out of every ten new jobs in the European Union despite the challenging geopolitical landscape.

The Prime Minister hailed the gigafactory project as a prime exemplar of "the best policy, one that generates quality jobs, transforms a territory, and provides it with a future brimming with opportunities." This achievement, he noted, is the result of concerted efforts towards ecological transition and harmonious collaboration between public administrations and the private sector.

Recognizing the project's potential to combat deindustrialization and revitalize the region, Sánchez expressed gratitude to AESC for their commitment, which will bring progress, wealth, and employment to Extremadura. He acknowledged the legal reforms implemented to facilitate this industrial endeavor, including the Territorial and Urban Planning Act, the Administrative Simplification and Rationalization Law, and the new regulations governing the lithium value chain and green hydrogen.

Sánchez underscored Spain's position as a major automotive powerhouse, ranking as the second-largest producer in Europe and the eighth-largest exporter globally. With 17 automotive factories across 10 autonomous communities, 15 technology centers, and 10 automotive clusters, the Spanish automotive sector exceeded 44 billion euros in exports in 2023 alone.

The Prime Minister affirmed the government's national commitment to sustainable mobility as an extraordinary opportunity for development. To this end, over 5 billion euros have been allocated to successive calls for the PERTE (Strategic Project for Economic Recovery and Transformation) for electric and connected vehicles, mobilizing resources worth nearly 24 billion euros in total investment.

Highlighting the project's significance for Extremadura's future, Sánchez celebrated the decisive determination of former President of Extremadura Guillermo Fernández Vara in bringing this initiative to fruition. He emphasized the government's dedication to territorial cohesion, noting that Extremadura accounts for 14% of the total PERTE VEC (Connected Electric Vehicle) grants, seven times more than its demographic weight would suggest.

Sánchez predicted that the new plant in Navalmoral would have "a decisive impact on attracting more companies in the sector" and would be "the cornerstone in generating an entire ecosystem around the electric vehicle value chain." He envisioned Extremadura as an international benchmark in the automotive future, a prospect unimaginable just a few years ago.
