As Morocco eagerly anticipates the joyous occasion of Eid Al-Adha, the nation's agricultural sector has meticulously prepared an abundant supply of livestock to meet the festive demand. In a comprehensive address to the Chamber of Counselors, Mohamed Sadiki, the Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development, and Water and Forests, unveiled the impressive figures and measures undertaken to ensure a seamless celebration.

Sadiki revealed that a staggering 5.8 million sheep and goats have been earmarked for the forthcoming Eid Al-Adha festivities, including 158,000 animals imported into the country. This substantial supply is poised to surpass the anticipated demand, underscoring the nation's commitment to providing ample offerings for the religious observance.

While the minister acknowledged a slight decline in both sheep and goat populations compared to the previous year, the figures remain substantial. The sheep population stands at 20.3 million heads, reflecting a 2% decrease, while the goat population experienced a 4% decline, totaling 5.4 million heads. Nonetheless, these numbers are expected to meet the celebratory needs with ease.

Further bolstering the preparations, Sadiki disclosed that 214,000 units of sheep and goat breeding and fattening facilities have been registered specifically for the Eid Al-Adha sacrifice. A comprehensive assessment conducted by the ministry, in collaboration with industry professionals, forecasts a total supply of 7.8 million animals this year, comprising 6.8 million sheep and one million goats – exceeding the estimated demand of around 6 million animals.

Ensuring the well-being of the livestock remains a top priority. Sadiki assured the implementation of rigorous surveillance and health monitoring operations, alongside protective measures against infectious diseases, affirming the overall good health status of the national herd. Surveillance efforts have also extended to animal feed and veterinary drugs, with 1,486 operations conducted as of May 31, resulting in the drafting of six reports forwarded to the Public Prosecutor's Office for instances of illegal sales and non-compliant seizures.

In a collaborative effort with the Ministry of the Interior, local authorities, and territorial communities, 34 temporary livestock markets have been established nationwide to supplement existing infrastructure, ensuring a seamless distribution and accessibility for the upcoming festivities.

As Morocco embraces the spirit of Eid Al-Adha, the nation's agricultural sector has risen to the occasion, meticulously preparing an abundant supply of livestock offerings while prioritizing the well-being of the animals and upholding stringent quality standards. With these comprehensive measures in place, the joyous celebrations are poised to unfold with an abundance of cherished traditions and religious observances.
