Agreement Signed for the First Matches of the 2030 World Cup in South America
It's official! The agreement establishing the organization of the first three matches of the 2030 World Cup in Uruguay, Paraguay, and Argentina was signed on Thursday at the headquarters of the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol).
The document was signed during the 78th Ordinary Congress of the Confederation by FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Conmebol President Alejandro Domínguez, in the presence of the presidents of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, and Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou.
"With this document that we have signed, we will all reflect on events to celebrate the 100 years since the World Cup organized in 1930 in Uruguay," said Infantino. He also added that "the 2030 World Cup will be the best, first in Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, and then in Spain, Morocco, and Portugal. This edition will unify the world in a true intercontinental celebration."
For his part, Domínguez invited Infantino to "rewrite" the history that began in Uruguay with the first World Cup. On this occasion, Infantino and Domínguez signed the historical book containing the original document by which the then FIFA president, Frenchman Jules Rimet, and South American leaders created the first global competition played in Uruguay. The document was recently found at the Centenario Stadium in Montevideo, where the 1930 World Cup was played, during renovation works.
