Deadly attacks on medical facilities shake South Kordofan

More than 30 people have been killed within a single week following three separate attacks on medical facilities in Sudan’s South Kordofan region, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Sunday, highlighting the growing dangers faced by healthcare services in conflict zones.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that Sudan’s already fragile health system is once again under direct assault. In a statement shared on social media, he confirmed that since February 3, three medical centers had been targeted in South Kordofan, an area already struggling with acute malnutrition and limited access to basic care.

The attacks have further strained humanitarian operations in a region affected by ongoing violence, displacement, and shortages of essential supplies. Medical facilities, which serve as lifelines for civilians, have increasingly found themselves caught in the crossfire of the conflict.

International organizations have repeatedly stressed that attacks on healthcare infrastructure violate international humanitarian law and exacerbate civilian suffering, particularly in regions where medical services are already scarce.

The situation in South Kordofan reflects the broader humanitarian crisis unfolding across Sudan, where prolonged fighting has displaced millions and placed immense pressure on food security and public health systems.
