Chinese automakers surpass 15 percent European electric vehicle sales

Chinese automakers have expanded their footprint in Europe’s electric vehicle market, surpassing 15 percent of battery electric car sales in April. The milestone reflects a rapid increase in shipments driven by rising demand for lower-cost models and expanded export capacity from China’s leading manufacturers.

Industry data show that Chinese brands registered 38,281 battery electric vehicles across Europe in April, more than double the level recorded a year earlier. The surge marks a sharp rise from their roughly 11 percent share of Europe’s electrified passenger car market over the full year 2025, underscoring a sustained acceleration in market penetration.

Beyond fully electric vehicles, Chinese manufacturers are also strengthening their position in hybrid segments. In April, they captured nearly 29 percent of plug-in hybrid sales across Europe. This broader performance across powertrains is pushing their combined share of the European passenger car market close to 10 percent, a level that signals growing structural competition with established European and Asian automakers.

The expansion continues despite trade barriers introduced by the European Union in 2024 on electric vehicles manufactured in China. Even with higher import costs, Chinese models continue to gain traction among consumers due to competitive pricing and advanced battery and software technologies. BYD has been a key driver of this growth, with European registrations surging to 37,580 units in March alone.

The overall European electric vehicle market also posted strong growth, with battery electric registrations rising 34.1 percent year on year in April to 201,541 units across 15 countries. While European manufacturers have launched countermeasures to defend market share, Chinese brands continue to expand at a faster rate than the broader market, reinforcing competitive pressure across the region’s automotive sector.
