Tesla registrations surge across Europe in May with triple-digit gains

Tesla registrations posted sharp gains across several European markets in May, with France recording a 655 percent year-on-year increase to 5,446 vehicles delivered, Sweden rising 71 percent to 858 units, and Denmark posting a 136 percent increase compared to May 2025. The figures mark a decisive reversal from 2025, when Tesla endured more than a year of consecutive monthly sales declines across Europe amid consumer boycotts linked to the political activities of chief executive Elon Musk.

The May numbers extend a recovery that began gathering momentum in the first quarter of 2026. Tesla registered 79,539 vehicles in Europe in Q1, supported by a record month in France in March with 9,569 units. The European Automobile Manufacturers Association reported that April 2026 registrations across the EU, EFTA, and the United Kingdom rose 46.5 percent year-on-year to 10,654 units. Weekly tracking data through late May confirmed the acceleration, with Tesla recording 3,600 sales across ten monitored European markets during the week of May 18 to 24, a 67.7 percent year-on-year increase and the strongest week of the second quarter.

The exceptional percentage gains in France and Sweden partly reflect a favorable base effect tied to an unusually weak comparison period. In May 2025, Tesla sales fell 28 percent across 30 European countries. Sweden saw registrations collapse 59 percent year-on-year in November 2025, affected by regulatory uncertainty, competitive pressure, and an ongoing strike by postal and mechanic workers against Tesla, which though recently reduced in scale continued to draw conflicted attention to the brand. Against that depressed baseline, even a partial normalization in consumer demand produces outsized percentage gains. Tesla's global deliveries grew 6 percent in the first quarter of 2026, reaching 358,023 vehicles, the first year-on-year increase in a first quarter in three years, though the figure fell short of analyst expectations. BYD continues to outpace Tesla in Europe, with 27,008 vehicles registered in April alone, more than double its total from the same period the previous year.

Prediction markets estimate Tesla will deliver between 425,000 and 450,000 vehicles globally in the second quarter. The May data from Sweden, France, and Denmark suggests European demand is contributing meaningfully to that recovery, even as the brand remains below its 2023 market share peak on the continent. How sustained the rebound proves to be will depend on whether the improvement reflects genuine renewed consumer appetite or simply a normalization following an abnormally suppressed period.
