Electric vehicle demand surges as oil prices climb above $100

Global demand for electric vehicles is rising sharply as oil prices surge following the conflict involving Iran, prompting consumers to reassess fuel costs and accelerate the shift toward electric mobility.

Brent crude has recently traded above 112 dollars per barrel, up about 60 percent since hostilities began on February 28. The increase has strengthened the economic case for electric vehicles, with higher gasoline prices driving changes in consumer behavior across Asia, Europe, and the United States.

The impact is particularly visible in Asia, where many economies depend heavily on oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz. In Manila, a BYD dealership reported receiving a month’s worth of orders within two weeks. In Vietnam, VinFast showrooms in Hanoi recorded a threefold increase in customer visits, selling 250 electric vehicles in three weeks, double the pace seen a year earlier.

India has also seen rising interest. Automakers including Tata Motors reported a sharp increase in inquiries, with early March accounting for most of the electric vehicle demand recorded during the same period last year. In China, BYD has introduced incentives such as extended free fast charging to attract buyers, reinforcing the shift away from fuel dependent vehicles.

Europe and the United States are also experiencing stronger demand. Battery electric vehicles accounted for 19.3 percent of the European Union market in January, up from 14.9 percent a year earlier. At the same time, the combined share of gasoline and diesel vehicles declined to 30.1 percent.

In the United States, online search activity for electric vehicles rose by 20 percent in the week following the start of the conflict. Interest in models such as the Tesla Model Y and Chevrolet Equinox EV nearly doubled. Gasoline prices increased from 2.98 dollars per gallon at the end of February to 3.63 dollars by mid March, with prices in California exceeding 5.40 dollars per gallon.

Analysts say the current oil shock differs from previous crises because the electric vehicle market is now more developed. More than 70 fully electric models are available in the United States, and charging infrastructure has expanded significantly. Falling battery costs, driven in part by Chinese manufacturers, have also improved affordability.

Cost comparisons are becoming more favorable. In the United Kingdom, operating an electric vehicle costs about 7 pence per mile, compared with 19 to 21 pence for gasoline vehicles. Some analysts expect the shift to accelerate further, with households increasingly seeking at least one vehicle insulated from fuel price volatility.

The current surge in oil prices is raising the possibility that the transition to electric mobility could advance more quickly than previously forecast, as consumers respond directly to changes in energy costs.
