United States warns Europe over Ebola travel rules escalation
Marco Rubio held a call with Ursula von der Leyen to coordinate the response between Washington and Brussels over the Ebola outbreak spreading in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. The United States urged European authorities to strengthen travel controls or face possible restrictions on European travelers entering US territory if coordination efforts fail.
The diplomatic pressure comes as the upcoming FIFA World Cup in North America raises concerns about large-scale international travel and the potential acceleration of viral transmission. Washington issued a formal démarche on June 1 calling on European governments to align their travel measures with US restrictions already in place. US officials warned that additional limits on transatlantic movement could be introduced if Europe does not act, a scenario that could affect fans traveling for the tournament.
The United States has already banned entry for foreign nationals who have been in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, or South Sudan within the previous 21 days. Returning US citizens from these regions must pass through designated airports and undergo enhanced health screening. European Union member states have instead relied on surveillance systems, airport precautions, and internal coordination rather than blanket entry bans.
The outbreak, linked to the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, was first reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo on May 15 and later declared a global public health emergency by the World Health Organization. As of June 8, the country recorded 550 confirmed cases and 101 deaths, while Uganda reported 19 confirmed cases and two deaths. International health agencies have launched a $518 million preparedness and response plan running through November, while European health authorities assess the risk to the bloc as very low but continue close monitoring ahead of a ministerial meeting in Luxembourg.
