Tangier strengthens infrastructure to prevent flood risks

Tangier, December 27, 2025 — In response to the heavy rainfall affecting Morocco in recent weeks, the city of Tangier has launched a large-scale preventive program aimed at reducing the risk of flooding and strengthening urban resilience.

As part of this initiative, more than 360 kilometers of sanitation networks have undergone maintenance, while around 40,000 storm drains and 50,000 water evacuation structures have been cleaned. In addition, nearly six kilometers of riverbeds have been developed to improve water flow and reduce overflow risks.

The operations were carried out through coordinated efforts involving the Loukkos Hydraulic Basin Agency, the technical services of the Tangier–Assilah prefecture, and the delegated company responsible for water, electricity, and wastewater management. The program represents an investment of nearly one billion dirhams and has reached an implementation rate of approximately 70 percent. A total of 130 agents and 15 specialized cleaning trucks were mobilized for the work.

These measures form part of a broader strategy focused on anticipation and climate adaptation. Authorities aim to limit the vulnerability of urban infrastructure and reduce the impact of intense rainfall, particularly in densely populated areas and zones located near riverbeds and the coastline.
