Morocco: A key player in regional development

In the past twenty-five years, Morocco has emerged as a pivotal force in economic transformation, industrial development, and modernization across its region, according to the Italian Institute for International Political Studies (ISPI).

Since the ascension of His Majesty King Mohammed VI to the throne, Morocco has made substantial investments in infrastructure, automotive industries, and energy transition, significantly enhancing its global attractiveness. This analysis, published on ISPI's website, underscores the importance of these developments.

ISPI asserts that the enhancement of infrastructure in Morocco has been the cornerstone of national industrial growth, part of a broader strategy aimed at increasing the Kingdom's role in global trade flows and strengthening its integration into global value chains.

Leveraging its geographic advantages, particularly its proximity to Europe and its Atlantic coastline, Morocco is consolidating its position as a commercial hub and gateway to West Africa and beyond. This strategic positioning is further bolstered by free trade agreements with the European Union and the United States, along with favorable relations with China and sub-Saharan African nations.

The ISPI also highlighted Morocco's port development policy, which includes the construction of new facilities along the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts. Noteworthy projects include the soon-to-be operational Nador West Med, designed to house the country's first regasification terminal, and Dakhla Atlantique, in addition to Tanger Med, which stands as the largest port in the Mediterranean by container capacity.

Furthermore, the expansion of the railway network illustrates the emphasis placed on infrastructure as an economic driver. Morocco has also invested heavily in its highway system and made significant strides in water resource management, including developing interconnections between the country's dams and reservoirs.

The Italian think tank focused on the automotive sector, noting that infrastructure development has allowed Morocco to become Africa's leading producer and exporter of vehicles, surpassing South Africa. ISPI also pointed out Morocco's ambitions in the electric vehicle segment, which includes producing electric cars within existing industrial complexes and launching national initiatives to manufacture fully Moroccan vehicles under the brand Neo, as well as investing in components such as chips and batteries.

In terms of energy transition and sustainability, ISPI emphasized that Morocco is progressively establishing itself as a leader in energy transition within the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The Kingdom is banking on green transition initiatives to ensure its energy security and emerge as an exporter of renewable energy.
