Morocco and the United States sign agreement to establish joint African military training center
Morocco and the United States have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a joint multi-domain military training and experimentation center in Morocco, reinforcing their long-standing defense partnership and strengthening security cooperation across Africa.
The agreement was signed during an official visit by General Mohammed Berrid, Inspector General of the Royal Armed Forces and Commander of the Southern Zone, to the headquarters of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) in Stuttgart, Germany. He met with General Dagvin Anderson, Commander of AFRICOM, to discuss expanding bilateral military cooperation and future strategic initiatives.
The planned center is expected to serve as an advanced platform for military education, operational training, and the testing of modern defense concepts. It will support the development of the Royal Armed Forces while also welcoming personnel from partner nations across Africa, promoting regional cooperation and improving operational readiness.
According to both sides, the facility will help strengthen interoperability between Moroccan and US forces, encourage the exchange of expertise, and improve preparedness for addressing evolving security challenges, including terrorism, transnational crime, cyber threats, and humanitarian emergencies.
The initiative also aims to promote innovation in defense technologies and military planning by providing an environment for joint exercises, research, and experimentation. Officials believe the center will contribute to building stronger defense capabilities among African partner countries while supporting broader regional stability.
The agreement forms part of the 2026–2036 Morocco–United States Defense Cooperation Roadmap, which outlines long-term objectives for expanding collaboration in training, modernization, strategic planning, and security cooperation.
Morocco and the United States have maintained close military relations for decades through joint exercises, defense dialogue, professional military education, and intelligence cooperation. Morocco also regularly hosts multinational military exercises, reinforcing its role as one of Washington's key strategic partners on the African continent.
The creation of the new center further reflects both countries' commitment to enhancing collective security, supporting defense capacity building, and promoting peace and stability throughout Africa. It also strengthens Morocco's position as a regional hub for military training and international security cooperation.
