Rabat to host second edition of the feminist conference

The association for the promotion of the culture of equality (APCE) is set to hold the second edition of the feminist conference on May 17 in Rabat, focusing on the central theme: “Violence and economic inequalities: understanding, analyzing, acting.”

Following a first edition dedicated to the reform of the family code, this upcoming gathering aims to address the economic dimensions of gender inequalities, aspiring to propose concrete responses to the barriers hindering women's empowerment in Morocco.

The event emerges amidst a concerning stagnation in women's economic status. Morocco ranks 137th out of 146 in the 2024 Global Gender Gap Report by the World Economic Forum, with a score of 0.628. This decline of one point from the previous year underscores the persistent disparities, particularly regarding access to employment, financing, productive resources, and economic leadership opportunities. The female labor participation rate remains low, and urban-educated women face the highest unemployment rates, exacerbating socio-economic inequalities.

On May 17, the conference will bring together government officials, experts, representatives from international organizations, and notable figures in Moroccan feminism for a series of key discussions. The focus will be on highlighting systemic barriers to women’s participation in the formal economy, examining legal, cultural, and structural obstacles to equality, sharing successful financial empowerment experiences, and contemplating collective action strategies to enhance women’s economic rights.

According to Aïcha Zaïmi Sakhri, president of the APCE, the stakes extend beyond mere social justice; they pertain to the overall development of the country. She emphasizes that the economic exclusion of women is not a fatality but rather the outcome of political choices and social norms that can be transformed. The APCE aims to leverage this conference as a catalyst for change, fostering dialogue, promoting best practices, and formulating recommendations for policymakers.

Beyond discussions, this gathering seeks to inform public policies and private initiatives advocating for equality. By emphasizing the economy, the APCE intends to reposition women's rights as a strategic issue for social progress and inclusive growth. This second edition of the feminist conference promises to be a pivotal moment for reflection and mobilization in support of a more equitable Morocco.
