Michael Bloomberg invests $100 million to curb methane emissions

American billionaire and former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg has pledged a new $100 million investment through his philanthropic foundation to tackle methane emissions — a major contributor to global warming.

Announced just days before the COP30 climate summit in Brazil, the initiative has been welcomed by world leaders, including UN Secretary-General António Guterres and French President Emmanuel Macron. The French leader expressed his willingness to “work alongside Bloomberg Philanthropies” to advance this crucial environmental cause.

Bloomberg’s foundation is already involved in projects using satellite technology to detect and monitor methane leaks around the globe, in collaboration with several environmental NGOs. “Methane emissions are one of the leading causes of climate change, but also one of the fastest areas where progress can be made,” Bloomberg said during a press briefing.

Methane — the main component of natural gas — is produced largely by agriculture and the extraction of fossil fuels. Although it remains in the atmosphere for a shorter time than carbon dioxide (CO₂), it has a much stronger warming effect. This makes reducing methane emissions a key strategy for achieving near-term climate goals.

The announcement comes amid declining U.S. engagement in international climate action under President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly questioned the urgency of global warming. Bloomberg, who built his fortune in financial information services, currently serves as the UN Special Envoy for Climate Ambition and Solutions.
