Morocco rises in African startup ecosystem rankings
Morocco has secured a spot in the top 10 African startup ecosystems, according to the latest Global Startup Ecosystem Index 2025 from American consulting firm StartupBlink.
The ranking shows progress for the North African country, but also reveals barriers that still limit growth. Morocco recorded the highest growth (above 23%) in Northern Africa, moving up four spots to 88th.
Based on 33 key indicators, the ranking reveals that on a worldwide level, South Africa ranked 52nd, retaining its position as the African country with the best startup system. Meanwhile, Kenya (58th) comes in 2nd in Africa, thanks to a 5-place gain on the 2024 edition of the ranking. Next come Egypt (65th), Nigeria (66th), Cape Verde (75th), Ghana (81st), Tunisia (82nd), Namibia (85th), and Morocco (88th). Senegal (ranked 92nd worldwide) closes the African Top 10, ahead of Uganda (94th), Rwanda (96th), and Somalia (100th).
Moroccan startups show strong growth
Morocco recorded notable growth in the rankings, climbing four positions from the previous year. The country’s startup ecosystem continues to expand, with cities like Casablanca and Rabat making significant strides in global rankings.
Casablanca leads Morocco’s tech scene, jumping 42 places to reach the 317th position worldwide. The city achieved a growth rate above 40%, the highest in North Africa. Meanwhile, the North African country’s capital city of Rabat also improved, climbing seven spots to 811th place globally.
Youth help drive Morocco’s rise
Several factors contribute to Morocco’s climbing startup rankings. The report identified the country’s tech-savvy youth population, growing digital connectivity, and increasing investment funds as key advantages. StartupBlink outlined Morocco’s stable and accessible environment for entrepreneurs. These foundations have helped create momentum in the country’s startup scene, particularly in major urban centers.
Challenges remain
Despite the progress, StartupBlink identifies several obstacles that limit Morocco’s startup ecosystem growth. Economic and social constraints continue to affect the business environment. Many startups still struggle to access adequate funding, which limits their ability to scale and compete internationally. The regulatory framework also needs improvement to better support new businesses and innovation.
StartupBlink suggests that Morocco must make investments more accessible and strengthen startup-focused infrastructure to accelerate growth. These improvements could help the country climb even higher in future rankings and compete more effectively with regional leaders.
