Google Maps evolves into an AI-powered personal assistant
Google has introduced a new generation of artificial intelligence features for Google Maps, transforming the application from a navigation tool into a smart digital assistant capable of helping users complete a wide range of everyday tasks.
The latest updates expand the capabilities of the Ask Maps feature, allowing users to search for restaurants, order food, book hotels, discover local attractions, and purchase event tickets through a more conversational experience powered by AI.
Instead of relying on simple keyword searches, users can now ask detailed questions in natural language. For example, the assistant can recommend restaurants that match specific dietary preferences, compare nearby dining options, and provide direct access to supported online ordering services. While payment is completed through partner platforms, the AI helps simplify the selection and ordering process.
Google has also enhanced travel planning by enabling Ask Maps to recommend hotels based on factors such as price, ratings, location, and nearby amenities. The assistant can compare available accommodation options and direct users to booking partners to finalize their reservations.
Entertainment recommendations are another addition. Users can search for concerts, comedy shows, sporting events, and other local activities, with direct links available for ticket purchases where supported.
Another significant feature is the integration of Google's Personal Intelligence technology. With the user's permission, the assistant can securely use information stored in Gmail and Google Calendar to provide personalized responses. For example, it can answer questions about upcoming flights, hotel reservations, or suggest nearby restaurants and attractions based on a planned trip.
Google emphasized that access to personal information remains optional and is disabled by default. Users must explicitly choose to enable these personalized features, maintaining control over their privacy settings.
The upgraded assistant is also able to remember previous conversations, allowing users to continue planning trips or activities without repeating earlier requests. In addition, real-time public transportation updates provide live information about delays, schedules, and service changes, helping travelers make informed decisions while on the move.
The company is initially rolling out advanced features such as food ordering, hotel reservations, and ticket purchasing to users in the United States, while broader AI capabilities will gradually become available in additional regions where Ask Maps is supported.
The latest update reflects Google's broader strategy of integrating generative artificial intelligence into its products, making Google Maps not only a navigation application but also an intelligent platform designed to simplify daily life through personalized recommendations and task automation.
