The recent suspension of Ouadih Dada, a distinguished journalist and news anchor at Morocco's public television channel 2M, has triggered widespread controversy over press freedom and union rights in the country's media landscape. The suspension, effective October 21, removed Dada from his positions as editor-in-chief and presenter of the evening news program "Info Soir."

The National Union of Moroccan Press (SNPM) has strongly condemned the decision, characterizing it as "arbitrary" and directly linked to Dada's recent union activities. The suspension coincided with the formation of an SNPM coordination committee within 2M and was implemented by the channel's outgoing Director of Information, Hamid Saadni.

According to union officials, this action appears to be part of a pattern of targeting Dada. A previous incident occurred on July 4, when Saadni questioned Dada's participation in a conference while on personal leave. The SNPM defended Dada, noting that his involvement in the conference was legitimate and stemmed from an invitation by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to host an event promoting royal initiatives for Atlantic countries.

Multiple theories have emerged regarding the motivation behind the suspension. Some sources suggest that 2M's management had become increasingly concerned about Dada's external speaking engagements, particularly his practice of accepting substantial fees for hosting conferences and events while maintaining his position as a public news anchor. His most recent external engagement was a conference in Ben Guerir for the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Industry.

Another perspective points to internal power dynamics, specifically a rivalry between two unions at 2M - the Moroccan Labor Union (UMT) and the SNPM. With nearly 400 employees, these unions represent significant voting blocs within the organization.

The SNPM has pledged "absolute and unconditional solidarity" with Dada, viewing the action against him as an assault on union activities. They have demanded that 2M's Director General and the CEO of the National Company intervene to reverse the decision and investigate Saadni's actions.

Ouadih Dada, has established an impressive career in Moroccan journalism. Born to Moroccan parents in Pierrelatte, France, he pursued studies in law and journalism before joining 2M in 2006. Throughout his career, he has made significant contributions to broadcast journalism, presenting over 2,000 news bulletins and founding the economic news program 'Econews.' In 2018, he further expanded his portfolio by launching 'Continentales,' a magazine dedicated to African current affairs. Since 2007, Dada has also authored several books.

The suspension has raised fundamental questions about the balance between journalistic independence, union rights, and professional ethics in Morocco's media sector. As the situation unfolds, it highlights the complex interplay between media institutions, labor organizations, and press freedom in the country.
