Morocco Defends its Iconic Fassi Caftan Against Algerian Cultural Appropriation
The Moroccan government has taken decisive action to safeguard the country's revered Fassi Caftan from being misappropriated by Algeria. In a bold move, the Ministry of Culture has filed an official complaint with UNESCO, urging the international organization to intervene and prevent the exploitation of Morocco's cherished cultural heritage.
According to reports, the ministry, in coordination with its permanent delegation to UNESCO, submitted a formal complaint after learning of Algeria's intention to include an image of the iconic Moroccan garment in a dossier for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage. The complaint vehemently objects to this appropriation attempt, emphasizing that the Fassi Caftan is an integral part of Morocco's identity and cultural legacy.
Notably, the ministry's complaint alleges that the caftan depicted in Algeria's UNESCO application is a stolen artifact from a museum in Amsterdam, originally belonging to Morocco. This revelation adds weight to Morocco's argument and underscores the gravity of the situation.
The complaint calls for the immediate removal of the Fassi Caftan image from Algeria's dossier, asserting that UNESCO should reject such blatant exploitation of its 2003 Convention on safeguarding intangible cultural heritage. This convention aims to protect and promote oral traditions, performing arts, social practices, rituals, festive events, and traditional craftsmanship worldwide.
Furthermore, the Moroccan ministry has urged the UNESCO committee responsible for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage to remain vigilant in handling nomination files to prevent further instances of cultural heritage misappropriation by other nations.
This assertive action by Morocco comes in the wake of an online petition launched last year by Moroccan activists, which garnered tens of thousands of signatures, vehemently opposing Algeria's attempt to claim the Fassi Caftan as part of its cultural heritage. The petition reflects the widespread concern and disapproval among Moroccans over cultural appropriation.
