Morocco's Coalition Government Reaffirms Commitment to Palestinian and Lebanese Causes

In a significant meeting, Morocco’s government coalition expressed strong condemnation of the ongoing violence in Palestine and reaffirmed its support for Lebanon. The council's statement underscored the belief that enduring peace and stability in the region can only be achieved through a two-state solution, highlighting Morocco's dedication to the rights of the Palestinian people.

Chaired by Aziz Akhannouch, Secretary General of the National Rally of Independents (RNI), the meeting included key figures such as Fatima Zahra Mansouri, coordinator of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), and Nizar Baraka, Secretary-General of the Istiqlal Party (PI). The coalition's unified message reflects Morocco’s commitment to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Since October 7, 2023, there has been a notable resurgence of public support for Palestine within Morocco, accompanied by widespread condemnation of Israel's actions in Gaza. Major protests have erupted across the nation, particularly in the capital, Rabat, where thousands marched to mark the anniversary of the onset of hostilities, demanding that the Moroccan government sever diplomatic ties with Israel. Protesters waved Palestinian and Lebanese flags and chanted slogans denouncing Israeli actions, which they attributed to U.S. support.

Alongside its international commitments, the council addressed pressing domestic issues, particularly the ongoing inflation affecting Moroccan citizens. The coalition pointed to external factors contributing to the economic challenges and detailed a series of "practical measures" aimed at alleviating these pressures. These initiatives include direct financial support for families, efforts to stabilize prices for essential goods such as water and electricity, and interventions in transportation.

The council also emphasized the government's commitment to enhancing the social and economic conditions of citizens, particularly focusing on the middle class and vulnerable populations. They pledged to prioritize initiatives that improve employability and address the repercussions of natural disasters, such as last year's devastating floods and the Al Haouz earthquake, which claimed over 3,000 lives and left thousands injured.

Furthermore, the coalition reiterated Morocco's position regarding the recent ruling by the European Court of Justice (ECJ), which criticized the European Commission's actions regarding Sahara. The council described the ruling as lacking foresight and neutrality, asserting that issues of territorial integrity fall under the jurisdiction of the UN Security Council. The statement reinforced Morocco's commitment to rejecting any agreements that do not respect its sovereignty and national unity.

Through this multi-faceted approach, Morocco's government coalition aims to balance its international responsibilities with pressing domestic challenges, reaffirming its dedication to both regional justice and the welfare of its citizens.
