US bolsters southern border security with 3,000 additional troops

The United States has announced the imminent deployment of nearly 3,000 additional troops to the border with Mexico as part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal immigration.

This decision, revealed on Saturday by the U.S. Northern Command (Northcom), will bring the total number of military personnel stationed at the southern border to approximately 9,000. According to the command’s statement, the reinforcements aim to assist border patrol authorities in “maintaining security at the southern border.” However, the troops will not engage in direct migrant interdiction or deportation operations.

The additional forces will focus on surveillance, administrative support, and logistical tasks, including enhanced aerial transportation capabilities, the statement explained.

“These deployments will provide added agility and support to address the flow of illegal migrants and drugs along the southern border,” said General Gregory Guillot, commander of Northcom, as quoted in the announcement.

President Donald Trump, who has made the fight against illegal immigration a cornerstone of his administration, previously declared a state of emergency at the southern border. He also authorized the deployment of 1,500 additional troops earlier this year to reinforce border security measures.
