Wildfire Risks in Morocco: Mapping the Danger Zones

In a proactive move to combat the looming threat of wildfires, the National Agency for Water and Forests (ANEF) has embarked on a daily endeavor to produce precise maps identifying high-risk zones across the nation. This strategic initiative underscores Morocco's commitment to anticipating and mitigating the perils posed by forest fires.

"In an effort to anticipate the issue of forest fires in our country, the National Agency for Water and Forests is producing, on a daily basis and through its scientific prediction models, maps that accurately identify high-risk areas across the entire national territory," a statement from ANEF reads.

For the period spanning from May 30 to June 2, and "after analyzing data related to forest types, their levels of combustibility and flammability, as well as topoclimatic parameters," ANEF has identified an extreme risk (red level) in the provinces of Tangier-Assilah, Fahs Anjra, Al Hoceima, Nador, Oujda Angad, Taourirt, Taza, Khenifra, and Beni Mellal.

Furthermore, ANEF has detected a high risk (orange level) in the provinces of Larache, Chefchaouen, Ouezzane, Driouch, Sefrou, Taroudant, Berkane, Rabat, Skhirat-Témara, Salé, and Kenitra, as well as a moderate risk (yellow level) in the provinces of Tetouan, Mdiq-Fnideq, and Agadir-Ida Outanane, according to the same source.

In light of these findings, ANEF urges residents living near forested areas, summer vacationers, visitors, and individuals working in forested environments to exercise utmost vigilance and take all necessary precautions to prevent the outbreak of wildfires.
