Man sentenced in Morocco for spreading false information in Soundous case

A Moroccan court has sentenced a man to six months in prison for spreading false information related to the case of a young girl whose disappearance deeply affected public opinion.

The ruling was issued by the Court of First Instance in Chefchaouen, in northern Morocco. The defendant was found guilty of fraud and disseminating misleading claims during an ongoing and highly sensitive investigation.

According to the findings, the individual falsely claimed to have information about the fate of the missing child, Soundous. He alleged that she had been abducted by a woman living in the city—statements that were later proven to be entirely unfounded.

Authorities stated that these rumors disrupted the investigation by diverting attention toward false leads, increasing confusion and anxiety among residents. The spread of such misinformation complicated search efforts at a time when coordination and accuracy were critical.

The disappearance of the young girl had mobilized the entire community. Local authorities, emergency services, and volunteers conducted extensive search operations in an effort to locate her safely.

Tragically, after several days of searching, the child’s body was discovered in a nearby water stream. The finding marked a turning point in the case and led to further judicial and forensic procedures.

A medical examination later confirmed that the death was accidental, putting an end to speculation that had circulated widely during the search.

Officials emphasized that the prosecution forms part of broader efforts to combat misinformation, particularly in cases involving vulnerable individuals. The case has sparked renewed debate about the impact of false information on investigations and public trust.
