US confirms deployment of weapons in space

The United States has publicly acknowledged for the first time that it has deployed weapons in space, signaling a further shift in the military importance of Earth’s orbital environment. The disclosure has raised fresh questions about the growing role of space-based capabilities in national defense and the potential consequences for international security.

US Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink made the announcement during a conference in Maryland, where he argued that space-based weapons are necessary to protect American forces and respond to increasingly sophisticated threats.

Meink said the United States must remain prepared to confront emerging security challenges wherever they arise.
