Suspect in Minnesota political shooting arrested

The suspect in the deadly shooting that left one Minnesota lawmaker dead and another injured has been apprehended. Authorities confirmed that 57-year-old Vance Boelter was arrested on Sunday after a two-day search across the Midwestern state.

According to the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office, Boelter’s capture followed a coordinated and tireless effort by several law enforcement agencies, supported by community input. A statement described him as “the face of evil” and hailed the arrest as a significant step toward justice.

Boelter is accused of fatally shooting State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, and injuring State Senator John A. Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, in an early Saturday morning attack that officials believe was politically motivated.

Boelter, who identifies as a security professional and previously served on a workforce development board alongside Hoffman, now faces charges of two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder.

Lieutenant Colonel Jeremy Geiger of the Minnesota State Patrol stated that Boelter surrendered peacefully and without the need for force.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz praised law enforcement for their swift and brave response. Speaking at a press conference, he honored the memory of Hortman, calling her a pillar of Minnesota’s legislative achievements and a defender of core values.

Governor Walz confirmed that Hoffman and his wife are recovering and credited their courageous response during the shooting with saving many lives.

He also condemned the rising trend of politically motivated violence in the U.S., urging a national recommitment to democratic principles and civil discourse.

This incident adds to a growing list of violent episodes involving political figures. In recent years, attacks have targeted officials such as Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband. Last July, President Donald Trump narrowly survived an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.
