Meta details AI restructuring as 8,000 layoffs begin
Meta will begin a new round of global layoffs on Wednesday as the company accelerates a broad restructuring focused on artificial intelligence and leaner management structures. Internal documents shared with employees show that dismissal notices will be delivered in three waves at 4 a.m. local time on May 20, while thousands of workers are reassigned to AI-related divisions.
The restructuring affects a major share of Meta’s workforce. Around 8,000 employees, or roughly 10% of staff, are expected to lose their jobs. Another 7,000 employees will move into new AI programs designed to automate workplace functions and develop internal AI systems. The company also eliminated 6,000 vacant positions that had not yet been filled, reducing future hiring plans as spending shifts toward AI infrastructure.
The new divisions include Applied AI Engineering, Central Analytics, and an internal project known as Agent Transformation Accelerator. These groups are tied to Meta’s broader “AI for Work” strategy, which aims to create autonomous AI agents capable of handling tasks currently performed by human employees. Internal memos also indicate that several management layers will disappear as teams are reorganized into smaller operational units intended to move faster and reduce bureaucracy.
Employees in North America were instructed to work remotely during the layoff process. The restructuring has generated internal backlash in recent weeks. Workers circulated protest posters inside Meta offices, while more than 1,000 employees signed a petition opposing software that tracks mouse movements and computer interactions for AI training purposes. Some staff members also criticized company leadership for remaining silent for weeks after reports of layoffs first surfaced internally.
The cuts mark Meta’s largest workforce reduction since the company eliminated about 21,000 jobs across 2022 and 2023 during what CEO Mark Zuckerberg called the “year of efficiency.” The latest changes come as Meta sharply increases investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure. The company expects capital expenditures between $115 billion and $135 billion in 2026, nearly double its estimated 2025 spending. The funding will support data centers, GPUs, and large-scale AI systems viewed as central to Meta’s long-term strategy.
Employees in the United States affected by the layoffs will receive 16 weeks of base pay, plus two additional weeks for every year worked at the company. Health insurance coverage will continue for up to 18 months after termination.
