Day 997 of the Russia-Ukraine War: Key Developments

 Combat Updates

A missile attack in the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy claimed the lives of 10 individuals, including two children, and injured 55 others, according to local officials. Among the injured were eight children. Another missile strike left the region's administrative center without power.

Russian air defense reported intercepting 59 Ukrainian drones overnight, including two targeting the capital. In the Bryansk region, 45 drones were destroyed, according to official statements.

On Sunday, Russia launched its largest air strike on Ukraine in nearly three months, deploying 120 missiles and 90 drones. Ukrainian authorities reported seven fatalities and extensive damage to the power grid. The Ukrainian air force claimed to have intercepted 104 missiles and 42 drones, while another 41 drones reportedly disappeared from radar.

As a result of the attacks, emergency power outages were implemented in Kyiv and two eastern regions. Moldova reported airspace violations during the assault, while Poland, a NATO member, scrambled its air force as a precaution.

 Political and Diplomatic Developments

Reports indicate that the United States has authorized Ukraine to use American-made weapons to conduct strikes deep within Russian territory, marking a significant policy shift. This decision has drawn sharp criticism from Russian officials, who warned of escalating the conflict with global implications.

French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the recent Russian air strikes, stating they reveal President Vladimir Putin’s unwillingness to negotiate for peace.

The attacks have also complicated discussions at the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, with some diplomats reporting a weakening consensus over a joint statement on the conflict.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres labeled the air strikes on Ukraine as "unacceptable," citing the targeting of civilian and energy infrastructure. Similarly, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, after a prolonged conversation with Putin, reported no sign of a shift in the Kremlin's stance on the war.

These developments underscore the intensifying violence and diplomatic tensions surrounding the ongoing conflict.
