Trump blasts Mavericks over controversial Doncic trade

U.S. President Donald Trump has sharply criticized the Dallas Mavericks over the blockbuster trade that sent Slovenian superstar Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, reviving debate over one of the most controversial deals in recent NBA history.

Trump made the remarks while speaking at a Republican midterm election conference held at the American Airlines Center, the Mavericks’ home arena in Dallas. Addressing supporters in Texas, he questioned the decision to part ways with Doncic and suggested that the trade could eventually be remembered as one of the worst moves in professional sports.

Doncic was traded to the Lakers in February 2025 as part of a three-team deal that also involved the Utah Jazz. Dallas received veteran star Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a future first-round draft pick, while Doncic moved to Los Angeles alongside Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris.

The unexpected trade immediately generated widespread reaction across the basketball world. Doncic had established himself as the centerpiece of the Mavericks’ franchise and one of the NBA’s most influential young stars. His departure therefore came as a major surprise to fans, particularly given his status as a multiple-time All-NBA player and a key figure in Dallas’ run to the NBA Finals in 2024.

Trump expressed particular disbelief over the decision, arguing that he could not understand why the Mavericks had agreed to the deal. He even suggested that the transaction should somehow be reversed, drawing a comparison with his own approach to negotiations and business deals.

The trade also became a source of sustained criticism directed at the Mavericks’ basketball operations. General manager Nico Harrison, who had overseen the decision, was eventually dismissed in November 2025 after months of intense scrutiny surrounding the franchise.

The controversy has continued well beyond the initial reaction to the trade because the deal involves two players with very different profiles. Doncic represented the long-term future of the Mavericks, while Davis brought established experience and defensive ability to Dallas. The Lakers, meanwhile, acquired a player widely regarded as one of the league’s elite offensive talents.

Trump’s comments added a political spotlight to an issue that had already become a major topic among NBA supporters. Speaking to the Dallas crowd, he said he believed the transaction had been a poor decision and jokingly suggested that someone from the city should explain the reasoning behind it to him.

The president also discussed another famous sports transaction when supporters were asked to identify what they considered the worst deal in sporting history. Trump pointed to the 1919 sale of baseball legend Babe Ruth by the Boston Red Sox to the New York Yankees.

Ruth’s transfer became one of the most consequential transactions in American sports history. After joining the Yankees, he helped transform the franchise and became one of baseball’s most recognizable figures, while Boston endured a long championship drought. The deal has since become a lasting part of baseball folklore.

Trump’s comments about Doncic reflect how deeply the 2025 trade has resonated with Dallas supporters. While the ultimate value of a major NBA transaction can only be judged over several seasons, the decision to move a franchise player of Doncic’s caliber remains a subject of intense discussion among fans and analysts.

Doncic’s arrival in Los Angeles also reshaped the Lakers’ ambitions. His combination of scoring, playmaking and ball control made him an immediate focal point for the franchise, while the Mavericks sought to build around a different roster structure following the departure of their former star.

The debate illustrates the enormous stakes involved in NBA roster decisions. Trades involving superstar players can alter the direction of entire franchises, influence championship races and define the reputations of executives for years.

For Dallas, the Doncic trade remains one of the most closely scrutinized decisions in the organization’s modern history. Trump’s intervention has now added another high-profile voice to the continuing debate over whether the Mavericks made one of the biggest mistakes in recent NBA history.
