JD Vance joins rival social platform Bluesky

U.S. Vice President JD Vance recently joined Bluesky, a social network competing with Elon Musk’s platform X. He encouraged his supporters to follow him there, noting that Bluesky has become a popular space for political discussions among opponents of Donald Trump.

In his first post on the platform, Vance expressed enthusiasm about engaging in thoughtful political conversations. He also announced his arrival on his account on the competing network, inviting followers to join him.

Shortly after opening his account, Bluesky briefly suspended it for about 20 minutes to verify its authenticity, citing automated systems designed to prevent impersonation attempts targeting public figures like Vance. The account was quickly reinstated, and Bluesky welcomed the vice president to the community.

Vance’s initial posts focused on transgender issues, including the recent Supreme Court decision upholding restrictions on minors accessing gender transition treatments a topic that Trump supporters have made central to their political agenda.

His arrival on Bluesky was met with mixed reactions, with some users expressing concern and advising others to block him. Many Trump critics migrated to Bluesky following Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter and his political association with Donald Trump.

Bluesky was created in 2019 by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey as a spin-off and later became an independent platform. While both platforms have not recently released user statistics, analysts estimate X has around 600 million active users, compared to Bluesky’s 30 million as of early 2025.
