Morocco sets Mawlid observance for August 25

Morocco will mark Mawlid, the anniversary of the birth of the Prophet Mohammed, on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, according to the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs.

The ministry announced that Friday, August 14, will correspond to the first day of Rabi al-Awwal 1448 in Morocco. Mawlid is traditionally observed on the 12th day of this Islamic lunar month.

The date is determined according to Morocco’s official moon-sighting system. Religious authorities monitor the lunar crescent across different parts of the country before confirming the beginning of each Islamic month.

Mawlid is an important religious occasion in Morocco and is traditionally marked by religious gatherings, prayers, Quranic recitations and family celebrations. The occasion also provides an opportunity for communities to reflect on the life and teachings of the Prophet Mohammed.

As the Islamic calendar follows lunar cycles, the date of Mawlid changes each year in the Gregorian calendar. The official announcement by Moroccan religious authorities therefore provides the basis for determining the date of the national observance.
