In a significant affirmation of its diplomatic stance, Malawi has reiterated its support for Morocco's territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces. This development comes as Africa's position on the Sahara dispute has seen a notable shift in favor of Morocco since its return to the African Union in January 2017.

Madalitso Kwaderanji Kazombo, the First Vice-President of Malawi’s National Assembly, expressed this supportive stance during a meeting with Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs in Rabat on Tuesday. Kazombo emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations and highlighted Malawi's intent to leverage Morocco's extensive expertise, particularly in the agricultural sector.

Kazombo singled out Morocco's prominence in the fertilizer industry, underscoring its pivotal role in enhancing agricultural productivity. This acknowledgement aligns with Morocco’s long-standing strategy to bolster bilateral relations across the African continent, aimed at advancing sustainable development goals.

Over the past decades, Morocco has positioned itself as a crucial player in African diplomacy and south-south cooperation. The North African nation has ardently pursued stronger ties within the continent, serving as a gateway for diplomacy and fostering collaborative efforts among African countries.

In a 2022 address, Morocco’s Foreign Minister articulated the country’s foreign policy, driven by an earnest commitment to fortifying inter-African cooperation and promoting solidarity on various strategic fronts. The minister reiterated Morocco's dedication to enhancing cooperation across multiple levels, including security, culture, and socio-economic development.

Morocco's proactive approach to security cooperation is particularly notable. The country has consistently underscored the shared responsibility in addressing security threats, especially terrorism, which has disproportionately impacted sub-Saharan and West African regions. Foreign Minister Bourita recently highlighted this pressing issue during a high-level meeting in Fez, stressing the critical need to harness new technologies to combat terrorism in Africa.

As Africa continues to navigate complex geopolitical landscapes, Malawi's reaffirmation of support for Morocco's territorial claims underscores the evolving dynamics within the continent. This gesture not only fortifies bilateral relations but also reinforces Morocco's strategic role in shaping a cohesive and prosperous African future.
