In a noteworthy diplomatic stride, the Commonwealth of Dominica has reaffirmed its steadfast support for Morocco's Autonomy Plan, aimed at resolving the enduring conflict over the Sahara region. This endorsement arrives amidst increasing international backing for Morocco's proposed solution, increasingly seen as a pragmatic approach to achieving stability in North Africa.

During the regular session of the United Nations Committee of 24 (C-24), Dominica's Permanent Representative to the UN, Philbert Aaron, articulated his nation's stance. "Dominica fully supports the autonomy plan presented by the Kingdom of Morocco to end the Sahara conflict and views it as the foundation for a realistic and pragmatic solution towards stability and peace in the region," Aaron stated emphatically.

The diplomat underscored the growing global consensus behind Morocco's initiative, noting that over 107 countries have now expressed their support. This mounting endorsement highlights the international community's recognition of the plan's potential to break the decades-long deadlock.

Aaron also expressed Dominica's endorsement for the ongoing UN-led political process, emphasizing the pivotal role of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in advancing efforts towards a mutually acceptable resolution. The ambassador commended the efforts of Staffan de Mistura, the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy for the Sahara, in revitalizing the political dialogue.

The C-24 session, spanning from June 10 to 21, has become a platform for numerous nations to declare their positions on the Sahara issue. Alongside Dominica, a diverse array of countries, including members of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Guatemala, Burundi, the Republic of Guinea, Antigua and Barbuda, and Senegal, have all reiterated their support for Morocco's territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces in the Sahara.

This renewed diplomatic initiative comes at a pivotal moment in the longstanding dispute. Morocco's Autonomy Plan, initially introduced in 2007, proposes significant self-governance for the Sahara region under Moroccan sovereignty. Advocates argue that this approach provides a viable compromise, balancing regional aspirations with the maintenance of Morocco's territorial unity.

With international support coalescing around Morocco's proposal, observers suggest that this could potentially reshape the dynamics of future negotiations. The endorsement from diverse nations, spanning the Caribbean, Africa, and Central America, underscores the plan's broad appeal across various geopolitical contexts.

Nonetheless, challenges persist. The issue remains a source of regional tension, and achieving a definitive resolution will necessitate sustained diplomatic efforts and potential concessions from all involved parties.

As the global community observes closely, the growing support for Morocco's Autonomy Plan signals a potential turning point in the quest for a lasting solution to one of Africa's most protracted territorial disputes. With each endorsement, the prospects for regional stability and cooperation in North Africa seem increasingly attainable.
