Belgium: Eggs Recalled After 306 Cases of Salmonella
Belgian health authorities have confirmed a link between eggs from a farm in Geel and 306 reported cases of salmonella in the country. Multiple recalls have been initiated, while Belgium has alerted several European countries about a potential contamination risk.
A health alert is growing in Belgium following the confirmation of hundreds of cases of salmonella associated with eggs from the same farm. The Belgian Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (AFSCA) indicates that 306 people have been infected after consuming products from the Laerco BV farm, located in Geel, near Antwerp.
In light of the risk, the affected eggs have been withdrawn from sale and are subject to recalls. Consumers who still have these eggs are advised not to consume them and may return them to their point of sale for a refund.
Two Recalls After Salmonella Discovery
The first report dates back to the end of April. Analyses had revealed the presence of salmonella in one of the four chicken coops on the farm.
Further sampling then identified contamination in a second building. This discovery led the AFSCA to expand the withdrawal measures to the entire Laerco BV farm.
Two recalls were announced in Belgium, on May 11 and August 10. The affected products had been sold by several major retailers, including Colruyt, Carrefour, and Delhaize.
Several European Countries Alerted
So far, the recalls mentioned concern Belgium and Luxembourg. However, given the possible circulation of food products between European countries, the AFSCA has also informed the relevant authorities in France, the Netherlands, Italy, and Portugal.
This action is intended to verify whether eggs from the farm may have been distributed to other markets and, if necessary, to extend the withdrawal measures.
Affected Eggs Should No Longer Be Consumed
Authorities recommend that consumers who still have eggs from the affected farm do not eat them. Returning the products to stores for a refund remains possible.
The situation is now under enhanced surveillance by health authorities, as investigations continue to determine the extent of the contamination and the distribution channels involved.
