Morocco Unveils $258 Million Flood Recovery Plan: A Lifeline for Devastated Regions
In the wake of catastrophic floods that ravaged several Moroccan provinces, the government has announced a comprehensive rehabilitation program with a budget of 2.5 billion Moroccan dirhams (approximately $258 million). This initiative, launched under royal directive, aims to rebuild and revitalize areas severely impacted by recent flooding events.
The ambitious recovery plan targets a dozen provinces, including Errachidia, Midelt, Ouarzazate, Tinghir, Zagora, Figuig, Jerada, Taroudant, Tata, Tiznit, Gulemim, and Assa Zag. These regions have suffered extensive humanitarian and infrastructural damage, with at least 18 confirmed fatalities, the majority reported in Tata.
A tragic incident in Tata saw floodwaters sweep away a bus, resulting in five deaths and 13 rescues. Eleven individuals remain unaccounted for, underscoring the severity of the disaster.
The government's response has been swift and multifaceted. "We have mobilized all human and logistical resources to address the needs of affected populations promptly and effectively," stated a representative from the Head of Government's office. This mobilization involves various ministerial departments collaborating to ensure the program's successful implementation.
Key components of the rehabilitation plan include:
1. Reconstruction and repair of damaged buildings and homes
2. Restoration of road infrastructure
3. Rehabilitation of telecommunication networks
4. Restoration of electricity distribution systems
5. Repair of drinking water and sanitation networks
6. Support for agricultural activities, including:
- Restoration of small and medium hydraulic works
- Assistance for farmers who lost livestock in the floods
