“Like a woman” campaign promotes global recognition of female leadership
A global digital campaign titled “Like a Woman” has been launched to highlight and promote women’s leadership, coinciding with International Women’s Day 2026. Led by United Nations General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock, the initiative aims to reshape long-standing stereotypes and position women’s leadership as a driver of social and economic progress.
The campaign seeks to transform expressions often used to undermine women into symbols of strength and resilience. It aligns with this year’s International Women’s Day theme focused on rights, justice and action for women and girls. Organizers emphasize that despite progress, gender inequalities remain widespread across economic, political and social spheres.
According to United Nations data cited in the campaign, women’s leadership is linked to more durable peace agreements, stronger economic performance and more stable societies. These findings underpin the campaign’s message that gender equality is not only a social goal but also a measurable factor in development outcomes.
The initiative is primarily digital, using social media, websites and mobile platforms to reach a global audience. Content includes short videos, personal testimonies and data-driven visuals designed to engage younger generations and encourage widespread participation.
At its core, the campaign features stories of women across sectors and regions. Profiles range from public figures to professionals in science, technology and sports, illustrating diverse pathways to leadership. These narratives are supported by data, including estimates that increasing female employment in developing economies could raise GDP by up to 4 percent.
The campaign also reflects broader trends in purpose-driven communication, where organizations increasingly link messaging to social impact. It has gained traction through partnerships and local initiatives, with related efforts emerging in regions such as Africa and Europe to promote education, digital inclusion and entrepreneurship among women.
Organizers acknowledge that progress remains uneven. Recent assessments indicate setbacks in gender equality linked to global crises, including conflicts and economic disruptions. The campaign aims to counter this trend by encouraging public engagement and shifting everyday language and perceptions.
Participants are invited to share their own experiences using the hashtag #LikeAWoman, creating a participatory movement that extends beyond institutional messaging. The initiative is expected to continue through 2027 with additional digital events and collaborations.
By focusing on representation, data and storytelling, the campaign positions women’s leadership as central to building inclusive and sustainable societies.
