Venezuela to exhume body of political prisoner months after death in custody
Venezuelan authorities have announced the exhumation of the body of political prisoner Víctor Hugo Quero Navas nearly a year after his reported death in custody, a case that has intensified concerns over detention conditions and human rights in the country.
According to official statements, Quero Navas, 51, was arrested in early 2025 and later died while under state custody. Authorities confirmed his death months after his burial, prompting prosecutors to order a forensic exhumation and DNA testing to formally identify the remains.
Family members had reportedly spent months searching for information about his whereabouts. His mother, Carmen Navas, publicly appealed to authorities and human rights organizations to determine whether her son was alive after receiving no clear information regarding his detention.
The case has drawn strong reactions from local and international human rights groups, which continue to raise concerns about alleged forced disappearances, prison conditions, and the treatment of political detainees in Venezuela. Organizations defending prisoners’ rights say several detainees have died in custody during the past decade.
Authorities stated that Quero Navas had been transferred to a military hospital after suffering severe health complications and later died from respiratory failure linked to medical issues. Officials also claimed that no relatives had formally contacted prison authorities during his detention, an explanation disputed by relatives and advocacy groups.
The incident comes during a period of political tension in Venezuela, where debates over political prisoners, judicial reforms, and civil liberties remain highly sensitive. Although hundreds of detainees have reportedly been released under recent political measures, human rights organizations say many prisoners are still being held across the country.
Legal experts believe the exhumation process could become an important test of transparency and accountability within the Venezuelan justice system as calls for independent investigations continue.
