Upholding Cleanliness Amidst Festivities: Laayoune's Concerted Efforts for Eid al-Adha Waste Management
As the joyous occasion of Eid al-Adha unfolded, the city of Laayoune and its dedicated sanitation service provider joined forces to ensure a clean and hygienic environment for residents. With meticulous planning and comprehensive resource mobilization, they aimed to swiftly restore the city's pristine condition following the animal sacrifices that mark this sacred observance.
From the first day of Eid, the stakeholders responsible for maintaining cleanliness in Laayoune sprang into action, determined to dispose of the waste resulting from the ritual slaughtering of sheep in a safe and environmentally conscious manner. Their efforts aimed not only at eliminating unsanitary practices but also at preserving the city's aesthetic appeal.
In a statement to the press, Ahmed Idrissi, Head of Cleaning and Environmental Services at the Laayoune Municipal Council, emphasized that both the council and the contracted sanitation company had mobilized all necessary logistical means, human resources, and measures to efficiently manage the waste generated during the three days of Eid al-Adha.
Idrissi underscored the challenge this year's Eid posed, highlighting the need to maintain control over the situation and ensure the city's cleanliness within the shortest possible timeframe. He revealed that all available cleaning equipment and personnel, across various service providers, had been deployed with a particular focus on areas with high population densities.
Furthermore, Idrissi urged citizens to adopt environmentally responsible behaviors, assuring them that the municipal council stood ready to implement any urgent measures deemed necessary.
Azzedine Bendaher, Operations Director at the sanitation company "Ozone Laayoune La Perla," shed light on the well-coordinated program crafted by the municipal cleaning services and the contracted company to guarantee the city's cleanliness during this religious celebration.
Bendaher disclosed that the cleaning staff commenced their duties at 2 PM on the day of Eid, dedicating their efforts to collecting the waste generated by the sacrificial rituals. He affirmed that the cleaning operations are ongoing without interruption until all waste is removed from public spaces and the city's streets are thoroughly cleansed.
After each cleaning operation, the sanitation workers meticulously wash the waste containers and conduct disinfection and pest control measures at the designated waste collection points, he added.
To tackle this monumental undertaking, the contracted sanitation service provider mobilized and deployed over 250 cleaning personnel and approximately 35 specialized vehicles. The Laayoune Municipal Council deployed nearly 36 staff members, 10 trucks, and vans. Additionally, 900 waste containers, including 25 underground bins, were strategically positioned throughout the city.
In the days leading up to Eid al-Adha, the Laayoune Municipal Council organized a series of awareness campaigns in coordination with local authorities. These efforts aimed to promote cleanliness and hygiene during the festivities, further underscored by the distribution of plastic bags across various neighborhoods within the city.
As Laayoune celebrated this sacred occasion, the collaborative efforts of the municipal authorities and the dedicated sanitation services exemplified a steadfast commitment to maintaining a clean and healthy environment for residents. Through meticulous planning, resource mobilization, and a shared sense of responsibility, the city's cleanliness was upheld, ensuring a joyous and hygienic Eid al-Adha celebration for all.
