Unveiling the Russian Disinformation Campaign: A Deepfake Hit-and-Run Scandal

A recent revelation by Microsoft has exposed a sophisticated disinformation campaign orchestrated by a Russian propaganda group, shedding light on the intricate tactics employed to influence public opinion ahead of the upcoming US presidential election.

The false narrative, which gained traction on social media, alleged that Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential candidate, was involved in a hit-and-run incident in San Francisco in 2011, leaving a young girl paralysed. Microsoft's researchers uncovered a meticulous operation, revealing that the group had created a deceptive video, hired an actor to portray the alleged victim, and disseminated the claim through a fake news website, KBSF-TV. This Kremlin-aligned troll farm, dubbed Storm-1516, is known for its expertise in producing misleading content, often employing actors to impersonate whistleblowers or journalists.

The timing of this operation is significant, as Microsoft suggests it indicates Russia's intensified efforts to exert foreign influence. With President Biden's withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race, Russian actors have shifted their focus, targeting Vice President Harris and her running mate, Governor Tim Walz, with outlandish conspiracy theories.

Online registration records show that the KBSF-TV website was established shortly before publishing its first article about the alleged driving incident, adding credibility to the false claim. The video, which has amassed over 2.7 million views, was widely circulated on social media platforms, including X (formerly Twitter), using the hashtag #HitAndRunKamala.

Microsoft's Threat Analysis Center emphasized the extensive reach of this disinformation campaign, stating that numerous entities within the pro-Russian ecosystem propagated the video and its claims. This incident highlights the growing concern over foreign interference in US elections and the need for robust measures to counter such operations.

Furthermore, the US justice department has taken action against two employees of the Russian state media network RT, charging them with money-laundering for allegedly hiring an American company to produce online content aimed at influencing the election. US officials believe that Russia's ultimate goal is to exacerbate political divisions within the US and undermine public support for military aid to Ukraine.

Kamala Harris, if elected, has pledged to continue supporting Ukraine's defence against Russia's invasion, a stance that aligns with the US's current foreign policy. As the presidential election approaches, it is crucial to remain vigilant against such disinformation campaigns, ensuring that voters are equipped with accurate information to make informed decisions.
