UK to acquire fighter jets equipped for tactical nuclear weapons

The United Kingdom announced plans to purchase twelve F-35A fighter jets capable of deploying tactical nuclear weapons, marking the largest expansion of its nuclear deterrent in decades. This acquisition will enable the British Air Force to carry nuclear arms for the first time since the Cold War’s conclusion.

Currently, the UK’s nuclear deterrent relies solely on a continuous patrol of at least one submarine armed with nuclear missiles. The government is increasing defense spending and modernizing its military forces, including its submarine fleet, in response to growing tensions with Russia and a reduced US military presence in Europe.

The announcement came during a NATO summit where European nations agreed on a target to allocate 5% of their GDP to defense and security. The United States will provide B61 tactical nuclear bombs for use with these jets as part of Britain’s expanded role in European security.

The purchase will allow the UK to contribute dual-capable aircraft to NATO, enhancing its nuclear posture in the event of conflict. The estimated cost for each F-35A is approximately £80 million, totaling just under £1 billion for all twelve.

Currently, the UK depends on the Trident submarine system for its nuclear deterrent, which experienced recent test failures. Tactical nuclear weapons, intended for battlefield use, differ from strategic weapons designed for long-range attacks.

Acquiring these jets will diversify the UK’s military capabilities and strengthen its alignment with NATO allies such as the United States and France, which maintain nuclear forces across land, sea, and air.

The US withdrew its last nuclear weapons from the UK in 2008, reflecting a reduced threat perception after the Cold War. The UK government states that the new fighter jet program will support around 20,000 jobs domestically and reaffirm its commitment to national and allied security.
