UAE Pushes for Humanitarian Aid in Sudan Amid Ongoing Crisis Talks

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing the humanitarian crisis in Sudan following a series of high-level talks held in Switzerland from August 14 to 23, 2024. The discussions, convened by the United States and co-hosted by Saudi Arabia and Switzerland, brought together key international stakeholders under the newly established ALPS group (Aligned to Advance Lifesaving and Peace in Sudan).

Her Excellency Lana Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister for Political Affairs in the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led the UAE delegation and emphasized the dire humanitarian situation in Sudan. "The need for humanitarian assistance is overwhelming," Nusseibeh stated, calling for unimpeded access for aid groups to deliver crucial support to those in need.

The UAE has been a significant contributor to Sudan's humanitarian efforts, providing over $3.5 billion in aid over the past decade, including $230 million since the outbreak of the current crisis. Nusseibeh reiterated the UAE's firm commitment to continuing these efforts.

The talks in Switzerland built upon the foundation of the Jeddah Agreements and resulted in several tangible outcomes. Notably, participants agreed on practical steps to improve humanitarian access and civilian protection. These include permission for the UN to use the Adre border crossing into Sudan and facilitating aid delivery to famine-stricken areas in Darfur, such as Zamzam camp.

Additionally, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) committed to new directives on civilian protection, addressing issues such as sexual and gender-based violence, child recruitment, and forced disappearances.

The UAE played a crucial role in establishing a dedicated track within the ALPS process to integrate Sudanese women's perspectives into peace and humanitarian efforts. This initiative aims to promote their goals and needs while pressuring parties to protect all civilians, especially women and girls, from violations of international humanitarian law.

Despite these positive developments, Nusseibeh expressed regret that progress on a full cessation of hostilities fell short of expectations. She also noted the absence of one party from the talks, hoping for their future participation.

The UAE remains steadfast in its support for the Sudanese people, working towards restoring peace and ensuring the delivery of vital aid. As the international community continues to grapple with this pressing crisis, the UAE's involvement underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing complex humanitarian challenges.
