Slovenia endorses Morocco's autonomy initiative for lasting Sahara solution
The Slovenian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tanja Fajon, emphasized on Friday that her country regards Morocco's autonomy initiative, presented in 2007, as a solid foundation for a definitive resolution to the regional dispute surrounding the Moroccan Sahara.
Speaking at a press conference following discussions in Slovenia's capital with Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, Fajon commended Morocco's serious and credible efforts to address the Sahara issue.
This statement reaffirms Slovenia's stance articulated in the political declaration dated June 11, 2024, during Fajon's official visit to Rabat. This declaration serves as a reference point for the renewed dynamics of bilateral relations and confirms Slovenia's position regarding the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
Additionally, the two ministers agreed on the United Nations’ exclusive role in the political process and reiterated their support for the UN Security Council resolutions, including the most recent one, 2756 (2024).
Fajon reiterated Slovenia's longstanding support for the UN-led process aimed at achieving a fair, sustainable, and mutually acceptable political solution based on compromise.
Both Morocco and Slovenia affirmed their support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to encourage all parties to advance the political process in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions. They also reaffirmed their backing for the MINURSO.
