Türkiye extends condolences to Brazil after deadly floods in Minas Gerais
Türkiye has expressed its condolences to Brazil following deadly floods and landslides that struck the southeastern state of Minas Gerais, leaving dozens of people dead and many others injured.
In an official statement, the Turkish Foreign Ministry conveyed sympathy to the families of the victims and wished a swift recovery to those injured in the disaster. The message underscored solidarity with the Brazilian people during a period of national mourning.
According to fire officials in Minas Gerais, at least 46 people lost their lives after days of intense rainfall triggered severe flooding and landslides across several municipalities. Emergency teams have been working to rescue stranded residents, clear debris and restore access to affected areas.
The industrial city of Juiz de Fora was among the hardest hit. Local authorities reported that February rainfall reached approximately 584 millimeters—about double the historical monthly average—making it the wettest February recorded in the city’s history. Streets were submerged, homes were damaged and critical infrastructure faced significant disruption.
Brazil frequently experiences seasonal heavy rains, particularly during the summer months, but experts warn that extreme weather events have become more frequent and intense in recent years. Urban expansion, vulnerable hillside settlements and insufficient drainage systems have further increased the risks associated with torrential downpours.
As recovery operations continue, messages of support from international partners, including Türkiye, highlight the global dimension of disaster response and humanitarian solidarity.
