Conakry: Nongo’s Kiridi Bridge becomes dangerous as floodwaters rise

In Nongo, one of Conakry’s vulnerable road points becomes particularly difficult to navigate whenever intense rainfall hits the area.

Kiridi Bridge can be rapidly overwhelmed by rising water, with flooding spreading across the roadway and making passage increasingly hazardous for both motorists and pedestrians. As the water level rises, vehicles attempting to cross can find themselves stranded in the middle of the flooded section.

The recurring disruption has turned the bridge into a major concern for residents during periods of heavy rainfall.

Authorities sometimes halt traffic

When conditions deteriorate, security personnel may intervene to stop vehicles from approaching the bridge from either side.

Despite the danger, some pedestrians continue attempting to cross. With water covering parts of the passage, some use the roadside barriers to move forward cautiously while trying to avoid being swept off balance.

Others choose to remain at the scene and warn road users before they reach the flooded section.

Among them is Boubacar Biro Barry, who described the situation as particularly difficult this year. He said water rose across the bridge to such an extent that several vehicles had to be evacuated, while local residents eventually helped stop traffic after warning drivers and pedestrians.

The geography of the site adds to the problem

Residents also point to the physical configuration of the area as a factor behind the repeated flooding.

Abdoulaye Djibril Camara said the bridge sits relatively low between two hills, creating a natural path for runoff during heavy rain. Water descending from the surrounding slopes can therefore accumulate around the bridge and quickly cover the road.

The explanation reflects a concern frequently raised in flood-prone urban areas: the impact of rainfall can be amplified when road infrastructure is located in a low-lying area where drainage capacity is insufficient for sudden volumes of water.

A driver recalls a dangerous escape

Camara has experienced the consequences first-hand. He recalled becoming trapped in floodwater after his vehicle encountered difficulties while crossing the affected area.

Water entered the vehicle, leaving him in a situation he described as extremely dangerous. He said the experience convinced him that motorists should avoid flooded roads rather than attempting to estimate whether they can still be crossed safely.

For him, waiting for the rain to weaken is preferable to exposing passengers and drivers to unnecessary danger. Once rainfall decreases, he noted, floodwaters can gradually recede and roads may become passable again.

A recurring challenge for Nongo

The situation at Kiridi Bridge illustrates the difficulties faced by parts of Conakry during periods of intense rainfall.

For residents around Nongo, the bridge remains a sensitive point where a short period of heavy rain can disrupt traffic, strand vehicles and create risks for pedestrians. In the absence of further improvements to the site, local residents continue to rely on caution and warnings to limit accidents.

The message from those familiar with the area is straightforward: when water begins covering the roadway, delaying a journey for a few minutes can be far safer than attempting to cross.
