Trump says ‘Days Numbered’ for Venezuela’s Maduro
U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested that Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro’s time in power “is coming to an end,” while sending mixed messages about a potential U.S. military intervention in the country.
Speaking to CBS, Trump said he doubted the U.S. was “going to war” with Venezuela but hinted that Maduro’s “days are numbered.” The remarks came as Washington continues to deploy military units in the Caribbean, citing operations against drug-trafficking vessels—actions that UN officials have described as violations of international law.
Trump denied planning strikes inside Venezuela but refused to rule them out. “I’m not going to tell you what I’m going to do with Venezuela,” he said.
Maduro, who faces U.S. drug-trafficking charges, accused Washington of using its “war on drugs” as a pretext for regime change and for seizing Venezuela’s oil. The U.S. military has reportedly conducted over a dozen strikes in recent weeks across the Caribbean and the Pacific, killing at least 65 people.
UN human rights chief Volker Türk and several NGOs condemned the operations as “extrajudicial killings”, even when targeting alleged traffickers.
