Tragedy at Mexican Rally : Stage Collapse Claims Lives, Shakes Presidential Race
In a devastating incident that has cast a pall over Mexico's presidential campaign, at least nine lives, including that of a child, were tragically lost when a powerful gust of wind toppled the stage during a campaign rally in the northern state of Nuevo Leon on Wednesday evening. The collapse, which occurred while long-shot presidential candidate Jorge Álvarez Máynez was addressing the crowd, left an additional 63 individuals injured, according to the state's governor.
Horrifying videos circulating on social media captured the harrowing moment when the stage crumbled, sending metal poles and debris raining down on the attendees. The scenes depict people screaming in terror, fleeing for safety, and clambering from beneath the wreckage in the aftermath of the tragic incident.
In the wake of the catastrophe, Máynez, visibly shaken, addressed reporters, expressing his profound sorrow and assuring that the victims "will not be alone in this tragedy." He further announced the suspension of his upcoming campaign events as a mark of respect for those affected.
The grounds of the park where the event took place were subsequently swarmed by soldiers, police, and other officials, as nearby spectators sat stunned and haunted by the unfolding tragedy.
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador extended his condolences, sending "a hug to family members, friends of the victims, and political supporters." Expressions of sympathy poured in from across the nation, including from fellow presidential candidates.
Nuevo Leon Governor Samuel Garcia, a prominent member of Máynez's Citizens Movement party, issued a video message imploring residents to seek shelter in their homes for the next two hours as authorities grappled with the aftermath of the disaster.
Máynez himself took to social media to provide an update, revealing that he had sought medical attention at a hospital following the accident in the affluent suburb of San Pedro Garza Garcia, near the city of Monterrey. He reassured his followers that he was in good condition, emphasizing that "the only important thing at this point is to care for the victims of the accident."
The tragic incident has cast a somber shadow over the ongoing presidential campaign, which has already been marred by the killings of around two dozen candidates for local offices. However, this devastating stage collapse stands as an unprecedented and heart-wrenching event, serving as a sobering reminder of the risks inherent in the political arena.
