Three suspects arrested in Germany over cable theft disrupting rail traffic
German authorities have arrested three suspects in the central state of Thuringia following a disruption to rail traffic caused by the theft of railway cables, police said on Sunday.
According to the federal police, the incident was detected near a level crossing, where irregularities on the railway line led to an on-site inspection. Officers reportedly found suspicious footprints in the snow, which guided them to a vehicle registered in Poland.
The three suspects, Romanian nationals aged between 23 and 28, were stopped and questioned. Police said the individuals were already known to law enforcement for previous theft-related suspicions. Industrial bolt cutters were allegedly discovered in their possession.
Further checks along the railway line revealed opened cable boxes and severed signalling cables, confirming deliberate interference with rail infrastructure. The suspects were taken into custody on suspicion of disrupting a public service and damaging critical property.
Germany’s national rail operator, Deutsche Bahn, said repair work on the affected section was ongoing and expected to continue until Saturday. The disruption highlights ongoing concerns over infrastructure security and the impact of cable theft on public transport networks.
