Thailand suspends peace agreement with Cambodia following mine explosion

Thailand announced on Monday the suspension of the peace agreement recently signed with Cambodia, a deal facilitated under the auspices of former U.S. President Donald Trump in late October. The decision follows a mine explosion near the border that injured two Thai soldiers, raising concerns over ongoing security threats.

The agreement had aimed to end hostilities that erupted in July along the Thailand-Cambodia border. During the five-day conflict, both countries deployed ground troops, artillery, and air support, resulting in at least 43 fatalities and forcing the evacuation of over 300,000 civilians.

“The joint declaration we have been monitoring for about a week will come to an end,” said government spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat, referring also to the planned release of 18 Cambodian soldiers.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul emphasized that despite initial hopes, the security threat remains. “We thought the threat to security had decreased, but it has not actually diminished,” he said during a press briefing.

The Cambodian Ministry of Defense expressed a continued commitment to peace in an official statement, though Phnom Penh authorities did not immediately comment on the mine incident.
