Tanger Med emerges as a strategic port hub for Africa
Tanger Med Port has established itself as one of Africa’s most strategic maritime hubs, driven by its strong performance, advanced organization, and central role in global trade flows, according to observations highlighted by the Ivorian media.
Located at the crossroads of Europe and Africa, the port complex covers more than 1,000 hectares and is widely regarded as the leading port in Africa and the Mediterranean region. Its scale and efficiency give it a dual continental and international dimension.
Tanger Med stands out for its integrated multimodal model, combining maritime transport with rail, road, and industrial logistics platforms. The port is connected to more than 180 ports across 70 countries, reinforcing its position as a key gateway between global markets. Around 30% of its traffic is linked to African trade, underlining its role as a logistics hub serving the continent.
Through this strategic infrastructure, Morocco projects the image of an open, competitive, and well-connected economy, where industrial performance and African outreach advance together.
Designed to anticipate the evolution of global trade, the port features 2.8 kilometers of quays and depths reaching 18 meters, allowing it to accommodate the world’s largest vessels. Its terminals are operated by major international players, while national operators ensure the management of general cargo activities.
The automotive terminal plays a crucial role in supporting Morocco’s vehicle exports, enabling rail-based transport of cars produced by major manufacturers to international destinations. Meanwhile, the passenger and roll-on/roll-off port is undergoing expansion to handle growing transcontinental flows, with capacity expected to rise significantly in the coming years.
By strengthening connectivity and trade facilitation, Tanger Med continues to consolidate its status as a cornerstone of Africa’s maritime and logistics landscape.
