Sweden plans to purchase French navy frigates in major military investment
Sweden announced plans to acquire four new naval frigates from the French defense company Naval Group in what officials describe as the country’s largest military investment in decades.
The first frigate is expected to be delivered in 2030 as part of Sweden’s broader effort to strengthen its defense capabilities following growing security concerns in Europe.
According to Swedish Defense Minister Pal Jonson, the vessels will incorporate several weapons systems developed in Sweden, including technologies produced by Saab. The government aims to combine international naval expertise with domestic defense innovation.
The purchase reflects Sweden’s accelerated military modernization after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Sweden’s subsequent accession to NATO.
Officials stated that the new frigates will significantly expand the country’s maritime defense and operational capabilities in the Baltic Sea region. Sweden has increased defense spending in recent years and intends to meet NATO’s target of allocating 3.5% of GDP to military expenditure by 2030, ahead of the alliance’s timeline.
The agreement also highlights growing defense cooperation between Sweden and France at a time when European countries are reinforcing security partnerships and investing heavily in military preparedness.
