South Africa: western cape region battling wildfires for ten days
A wildfire that broke out on December 22 in the Cederberg area of South Africa’s Western Cape province remains active after burning more than 35,000 hectares of vegetation, according to local fire services.
Emergency authorities reported that most northern sections of the Cederberg region are now fully contained and under control. Firefighting teams, however, remain on high alert, focusing on suppression efforts, continuous monitoring, and the protection of nearby communities and critical infrastructure.
Firefighters have been working around the clock to contain several active hotspots in rugged, mountainous terrain that is difficult to access. The blaze is being described as one of the most significant recorded in the municipality since the devastating fires of 2018, having affected multiple areas across the region.
The current fire season in the Western Cape is considered one of the most challenging in recent years, largely due to dry conditions and strong winds typical of the austral summer.
Since the beginning of December, firefighting services across the province have responded to 79 wildfires, with 283 firefighters deployed in efforts to control and extinguish the flames.
