Solidarity Across Continents: Morocco and US Chart Course to Strengthen Military Ties
Key defense authorities from Morocco and the United States convened on Tuesday in a historic summit to outline plans for bolstering military cooperation and collective peacekeeping efforts.
General Mohammed Berrid, Inspector General of the Royal Armed Forces (FAR) of Morocco, warmly welcomed Jennifer Zakriski, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for African Affairs, to the FAR headquarters to discuss strategies aimed at solidifying defense ties that have endured for over two centuries.
“Our alliance with the U.S. holds a significant place in history as the first treaty established between America and an Arab, Muslim, or African nation,” General Berrid noted, referencing the 1786 Moroccan-American Treaty of Friendship, which remains the foundation of their diplomatic relations.
Officials expressed their shared commitment to collaborate on various aspects of defense, including defense industries, military procurement, training programs, technology transfers, and joint disaster relief efforts.
As the home to Africa’s oldest standing military force, Morocco has garnered attention for its leadership in peacekeeping missions across the continent, underscoring the kingdom’s reputation as a bastion of stability in the region.
This symbolic summit follows the enactment of a landmark defense cooperation roadmap in 2020, aimed at preparing both nations to address pressing security challenges over the next decade.
From joint military exercises to the provision of military hardware, this comprehensive partnership spans a wide range of areas, laying the groundwork for Morocco and the United States to collaborate closely in defense matters well into the 21st century.
