Six refreshing escapes from the summer heat in Barcelona and Catalonia

As summer intensifies in Spain, particularly in Catalonia and Barcelona, residents and visitors alike are seeking cooler havens to escape the relentless heat. Beyond beaches and pools, these destinations offer refreshing alternatives in the mountains and green spaces of the region.

Vall de Boí: a cool retreat in the Pyrenees

Nestled in the Pyrenees near the borders of Andorra and France, the Vall de Boí offers a perfect summer escape with temperatures ranging between 15°C and 25°C. Surrounded by lakes, rivers, and the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, this UNESCO-listed area is ideal for nature lovers. Visitors can also explore its Romanesque churches, a testament to the region’s rich cultural heritage.

Puigcerdà: a lakeside haven

Located in the Cerdanya region near the French border, Puigcerdà sits at 1,200 meters above sea level, offering temperatures of 19°C to 24°C. Its picturesque lake and surrounding mountain breezes make it a refreshing getaway. Nearby villages like Alp and Castellar de n'Hug provide quieter escapes with charming rural settings.

Setcases: a serene mountain village

The quaint village of Setcases, in the Ripollès region, lies just below the Vallter 2000 ski resort. With summer temperatures averaging between 12°C and 22°C, it’s the perfect spot for hiking or cycling through the dramatic mountainous terrain. Its stone houses and tranquil ambiance add to its allure.

Cooling off in Barcelona’s green spaces

For those staying in the city, Barcelona offers several cooler spots away from the urban heat and crowds.

- Collserola Natural Park: Spanning over 8,000 hectares above the city, this forested park provides shaded trails and cool breezes. While intense hiking might be challenging in peak summer, it’s perfect for picnics and panoramic views.

- Montjuïc Gardens: Covering the southwest hill of Barcelona, Montjuïc is home to lush gardens, fountains, and shaded spaces. With each garden offering a unique atmosphere, visitors can enjoy cooler temperatures amidst greenery.

- Parc del Laberint d’Horta: Tucked away in northern Barcelona, this historic park features intricate hedges, fountains, and a labyrinth, all designed to provide a cool, shaded retreat from the summer sun.

These destinations combine natural beauty with comfortable temperatures, offering much-needed relief during the sweltering summer months. Whether in the mountains or the city, Catalonia provides plenty of options to stay cool and recharge.
